I saw a commercial tonight for the new Chevy Colorado Crew Cab. A half dozen guys are plowing through some rugged terrain in their manly Crew Cab and one guy in the back is signing Shania Twain's "Man I Feel Like A Woman" - loudly. The rest of the guys cringe as he belts out lines like "the best thing about being a woman is the prerogative to have a little fun" - but no one is changing the radio station.
It reminds me how happy I am that I work from a basement home office and no one is around to hear me and Liz Phair singing "give me your hot, white come" over and over.
I'm gonna pull you back down between the sheets.
Everything is fresher when the day is sweet.
In the morning light, when you're already on the phone...
Face it one of these days,
Without you I'm just another Dorian Gray.
It's the fountain of youth. It's the meaning of life.
So hot, so sweet, so whet my appetite.
The funny thing is, I've seen reviews that call that song the album's lyrical peak.
HWC, meanwhile, is that rare thing: a genuinely subversive pop song. It's difficult not to sing along with the chorus, which could prove embarrassing in the bus queue...
I guess that all depends on where you're catching the bus.
If a song is incredibly infectious, wouldn't you sing it no matter what it made you sound like?

ALL WRONG
You're all wrong about this commercial. It is not harmless, but I don't see it as being reverse-racist either. In my opinion this commercial is sexist and homophobic. Think about it. The guy is singing to a song about "being a woman" while the other dudes carefully scoot away and roll their eyes. Clearly men are overly concerned about appearing macho and manly at all times, especially while traveling in one of these big manly SUVs. The definition of masculine is "not gay and not female." Chevy wants its prospective male buyers to come onto the sales lot in as manly a mood as possible, that way they can appeal to you with this oversized and overpriced hunk of metal and watch you drive off the lot with their commission check in their greedy hands.

LOVE IT!!!!!
I don't think this commercial is homophobic or sexist. I think it just shows how tthis man loves this song no matter what its about. Basically a good song is a good song & this is 1 of them. Woman sing men songs all the time , it's about time we gotta a man singing 1 of our songs. U GO BOY!!! SING THAT SONG!!! MAN! I FEEL LIKE A WOMAN!!!!

Maybe it's a little sexist
I thought the commercial was a little sexist, but it didn't detract from the humor of it. The odd thing isn't that the guy is singing about being a woman but that he knows the lyrics of that stupid song by heart. A guy who sings along to a Shania Twain song with such abandon... I would inch away from him myself. I also thought the commercial was brilliantly acted--it makes me laugh to tears every time.
BTW, "balrog" needs to have his head examined.

Sing Out Loud! Sing Out Strong!
I just saw that commercial and couldn't stop laughing. Mostly at myself because I have been that man in the back seat of a crew cab. Unless I happen to be singing right in sync and in tune with the song, everyone would know it was that crazy lady in the convertible singing. But I'd rather be that, than all those people sealed up in their cars having what appears to be a Turrettes Episode.
Now getting into the song content, I've done my share of inappropriate singing and quite frankly I don't see myself stopping as I get older. (Isn't that some sort of rule, that you need to be more embarrassing as you get older?) I don't even have children to be embarrassed for me, so count on me to sing backup on HWC and Tall Cool One or whatever you've got on the CD player.
And to get the rest of you started, here's the song that Brian put in my head with this damn post. I just want to say how much I love the Internet for allowing me to link to the lyrics and a tiny kareoke version of Sing, Sing a Song. http://www.startsandstops.com/tunes/archives/000140.html
