I think there needs to be something in between blogging and Twitter. Either that or they need to make their input form stop asking, "What are you doing?"
If Twitter is just for status messages, then that label works and your answer is your real status. If Twitter is for mass expression in little bursts, it should read "What do you want to say now?"
On an informal survey of people's tweets, I'd say maybe 10% are what the person is doing and the rest is promotional, chatting and replying to other people's tweets.

how cute. I've just been reading about the pork products that clog our mailboxes, y'know spam, bacn, ham and sausage. Twitters and tweets sounds like butterflies or perhaps a breakfast food, something similar to neeps and tatties. Damn all I need is a couple of eggs over easy and I'm set!

That isn't perfect (I'm not that bright), but I'll agree there should be something between blogging and microblogging... Maybe, like, comments? ;)
And are you ON twitter, or do you just lurk? I'm guessing you use some incredibly clever codename based on a pun based on a term from the 1800's you heard in a bar back in college.
Now I'm thinking about setting up FakeBrianAlvey, but no way I could come up with the wordplay. Or refrain from parentheses.

Yup. Twitter is at its best (for me) when I use it very occasionally to express a funny or insightful thought in as few words as possible. A bon mot generator, you might call it.
It's much less interesting when I use it to announce that my flight is delayed or my sandwich isn't fresh -- although that's how I (and most everyone else) mostly uses it.

I've always thought you'd be a perfect candidate for Twitter. Short bursts of cleverness work well for me (I tend to get long winded when I blog) but it seems like it was custom-made for you.

He does have a twitter account but he wouldn't even give me the name of it. I had to guess a few times until I found it :). Then he couldn't believe I found it and started following him :).
