"Take it easy, Mr. Alvey."

February 27, 2004 @ 5:00am

We had a great time with relatives from both sides of Niki's family, but it wasn't a toastable occasion for many reasons. If you were expecting highlights or some kind of transcript, I apologize.

We stayed briefly at the fantastic Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando. Everything had a little song lyric attached to it. Our welcome booklet said, "You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave," which didn't make sense because they wanted us out by 11AM. Our no smoking sign read "a no smoking sign on your cigarette break." Great music (Cake, Live, Cheap Trick, No Doubt) played all day long in the elevators and hallway speakers and every phone call to the front desk ended with the operator reminding me to "Take it easy."

An interesting touch, but I could see it getting old on my second visit to the hotel. I think they should alternate phrases to keep things fresh. When they pick up the phone they should answer, "So tell me what you want what you really really want," and maybe quickly repeat that eight or sixteen times. And when they end a call, they should throw in a little "You make me feel like a natural woman, Mr. Alvey" or "Don't fear the reaper, Mr. Alvey."
