The Zero Inbox Rule

March 8, 2006 @ 12:07am

Mark Hurst of Creative Good and Gel fame wrote a paper about Managing Incoming E-mail (PDF) where he says that unless you keep your inbox totally empty, it will rise up and choke you and your productivity to death. Something like that. So the first time I stumbled across his paper a couple of years ago, I decided to give it a shot. I probably had 8,000 messages in my inbox, some read, many unread.

Right now I'm continuing to slog through a brutal stack of paperwork, but once I get some time I'm going to attack that inbox. Really. I've chipped away at it this week a little and I have only 19,024 messages to go. Wait, new mail came in and it's back up to 19,483.

In case you are getting the idea that email is not the best way to get in touch with me, just keep in mind that I check my voicemail monthly.
