Putting the twit in Twitter

Twitter is this crazy new service for teenage girls that let's them update their friends all day long so everyone knows what everyone else is doing. It's like the status message on your IM client, but instead of changing between "Idle" and "Away" and "Online" you can tell your friends that you are "going shopping", "getting my hair done" or "shaving my legs" and those status messages can be broadcast to their phones.

This year at SxSW, its the Year of Twitter. They have monitors that show you a stream of Twitter statuses and my whole team is getting Twitter update text messages on their cell phones around the clock.

The crazy thing is that as long as I'm hanging out with them, I don't need to use the Twitter service myself.

I just listen:

"Now CK is going to take a shower."

"Now CK is having a meatgasm."

"Now CK is awake."

"Now CK is having lunch lunch lunch."

"Now CK's parrots are fighting."

"Now CK is telling an awesome muffin joke."

Well, maybe the global quality of blog posts will go up because Twitter will take over that part of intercommunication.

One of my favorite moments was seeing two people we didn't know laughing at the twitter monitor displaying Matt Heerema's message "Gong to grids"

Good work w/ the Muffin quote. I actually think Twitter is more than just a flash-in-the-pan, but they need to get better about notifying users of new features and fix a few niggling bugs related to profile updates. It's kinda like they're building up Dodgeball all over again feature-by-feature.

If you're even contemplating using Twitter SMS notifications rather than pure IM, get an unlimited data plan on your phone. Twitter's authentication cluster has been hammered over the past few days with new SXSW users and, likely, slightly-less-new users opting out of SMS notifications due to the sheer volume (read $$$) of messages.

That is a perfect name for the service. Seems really annoying to me, but I'm not a teenage girl (not even on the internet)
