Why do fish swim in salt water?

July 23, 2007 @ 12:23pm

I'm thinking about starting a "Brian Alvey Answers Science Questions" weekly column on my blog. Jack is at an age where he asks us 50 or 60 questions an hour, so I might as well start documenting the questions and answers here so I can help other people teach their inquisitive children about the wonders of science and this planet we all live on.

When you tell people, "Go ahead, ask me anything." they usually respond by asking, "Why is the sky blue?" People seem to think that's some kind of ultimate science trivia stumper and they get annoyed when you start telling them about the absorption and scattering of the shorter wavelength blue light waves by molecules in the Earth's atmosphere.

I think I'm up to the challenge. I just want to help people, give a little something back. I'm doing it for the kids.

In case you were still wondering, fish swim in salt water because pepper makes them sneeze.
