False contractions

August 17, 2007 @ 5:24am

I work with lots of people way younger than me -- like in their twenties -- and almost all of them suck at spelling.

Sometimes I think that caring about spelling was an art that vanished about four years after I was born and then I see someone my age or older who consistently uses "their" when it should be "they're" or "your" when it should be "you're". So it's not just an age thing.

The craziest misspelling I've seen recently was kind've, as in "it was kind've painful." What?!? I can understand mistakenly using "could of" when you mean to say "could've" which is short for "could have". But kind've? Good grief.

It also bugs me when they display "thru the night" during God Bless America on the big screen at Yankees Stadium. If it was a drive-thru, then go ahead and leave off the o, g and h. But there's plenty of room on that screen and it's a national anthem (but not our official one, I know, I know). Why not spell out "through the night"?
