This post took some of the sting off of my decision to get a BlackBerry Curve on the AT&T network. I was worried that the widely-slammed AT&T EDGE network, the one the iPhone is on, would make my BlackBerry Curve experience miserable (even though I use EDGE on my little Sony laptop with no real problems).
The author argues that EDGE has better latency and that cell phone processors can't keep up with higher bandwidth networks anyway. Plus EDGE will use up less power.
Whew. I'm glad I read that. I'm not sure if I believe it, but at least I don't feel like I made a bad decision going with AT&T again.

I've been on Edge for a couple years now, first with Windows Mobile and now on the iPhone, and frankly it's not that bad. It's also gotten much more reliable in that span of time, more so than T-mobile was. I'm using it to leave this comment even.

Excuse me if I call BS on this!
If you've ever been to the UK and tried our HSDPA connections 3.6Mbps+ (some places have over 7Mbps), you'll never want to use EDGE again. As for latency, it's almost identical to a UMTS or HSDPA network connection in my experience.

Ongoing problems with the EDGE network on ATT. Neither ATT nor Blackberry helps when called into their respective Technical Support numbers. The dropping of EDGE network occurs randomly throughout each day. VERY FRUSTRATING.
